Rapids trade for Kandji….FC Dallas misses out

I think it’s pretty clear to most FC Dallas fans that there’s no problems with the midfield. There as some(that I’m not a part of) who think that Atiba Harris shouldn’t be starting, but other than that I don’t think anyone would want to change the Shea, Ferreira, Dax(Alexander), Hernandez combination. The same can be said for the defense as while the parts seem to be moving around every game, there’s no need for any outside additions to the back four.

However, the forward position has been a trouble spot all year. Jeff Cunningham has the goals, but he’s not hassling defenses enough while Milton Rodriguez provides decent center forward play but can’t seem to find the back of the net consistently. This is why I’m pretty cheesed off to read that Mac Kandji was sent to Colorado today for the relatively low price of enigmatic Rapids midfielder Medhi Ballouchy.

Kandji is a tall, strong forward who excelled on a bad New York team last season and hasn’t been able to break through to find consistent playing time(understandably) behind Juan Pablo Angel and Thierry Henry. I’ve always rated him and thought he was due for a breakout season, but New York wasn’t patient enough with him. Perhaps he’s looking to move to Europe after the season and that’s why he was available for a cut price, but this is a guy who would have given Dallas some great depth at a trouble spot. We all know Ruben Luna is the future, but for this season and the next, Kandji would’ve been a great addition.

What do you think? Did FCD miss out on this one or is it too late to be making any changes and trading players away?

You can’t propose a trade without telling us who you think FCD would have given up. Everything I’ve read about this trade makes it clear that Backe wanted Ballouchy specifically. This was all about getting Ballouchy to RBNY…..Kandji was just the price they had to pay for it. As far as I know we don’t have anything to give RBNY (that we would want to get rid of) in order to bring Kandji here.

Definitely true, but I’m more trying to drive the point home that if there’s MLS forwards like Kandji that can be had, Dallas needs to trade for one.

Would NY have taken Avila and a first rounder? I’m not sure what Backe sees in Ballouchy, he’s a turnover machine.

I don’t know either…but he certainly made his intentions clear a few months ago. Is Avila a suitable replacement? I don’t think he has the MLS game minutes that Ballouchy does.

As far as there being “MLS fowards like Kandji”….I don’t know if there are. This was a one off trade. You don’t see this thing all the time. No other team in MLS would be willing to move such a potentially dangerous forward. Unless I’m mistaken no one other than RBNY can boast a forward pairing of Henry and Angel. Kandji might be good enough to start on 16 MLS teams….but not that one.
